What a Construction Estimator Does Daily

Estimators are the revenue engine of a GC. On any given day, they may be doing quantity takeoffs from drawings, sending invitations to bid to subcontractors, leveling sub proposals to ensure apples-to-apples comparison, or building a GMP for a negotiated project.

Senior estimators lead bid strategy — deciding which projects to pursue, what margin to apply, and where to value-engineer to stay competitive. They maintain relationships with specialty contractors who provide competitive sub numbers, and they know which subs to trust on complex scopes.

Chief Estimators and VPs of Pre-Construction run the department: hiring and mentoring estimators, managing bid volume, tracking win rate by project type, and interfacing with business development to identify pipeline opportunities worth pursuing.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • 5+ years of construction estimating experience
  • Experience with hard-bid and negotiated project delivery
  • Proficiency in estimating software: Sage Estimating, HCSS HeavyBid, PlanSwift, or Bluebeam
  • Quantity takeoff accuracy — tested during interview process
  • Subcontractor bid solicitation and scope-leveling experience
  • Understanding of CSI MasterFormat divisions
  • ASPE Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience
