Construction Project Engineer Recruitment
The Project Engineer is the entry point into GC operations — and the talent pipeline that grows into tomorrow's Project Managers. We help GCs find degree-qualified PEs who are ready to learn fast and grow into leadership roles.
Quick Answer
Construction Project Engineers (PEs) earn $65K–$105K in 2026, typically 0–5 years of experience, with a Construction Management or Engineering degree. PEs own RFIs, submittals, change-order tracking, schedule updates, and budget support alongside the PM. They are the primary pipeline into the Project Manager role (typical promotion path: PE 2–4 years → Assistant PM → PM). Top markets: TX, CA, GA, FL, AZ, NC. Specialty premiums: mission-critical/data-center +10–15%, healthcare +10%. Hiring velocity: 20–30 days typical — the entry-level pipeline is the easiest to fill but hardest to retain.

What a Construction PE Does Daily
The Project Engineer is the operational support layer of a construction project. A PE's daily work includes managing the submittal log — tracking which items have been sent to design, returned with comments, and resubmitted. They draft and log RFIs, coordinate procurement schedules with the PM, and maintain the project's document control system.
On the field side, PEs attend subcontractor coordination meetings, assist the superintendent with scheduling documentation, and manage punch list tracking during closeout. On tech-forward projects, they may run the BIM coordination process or manage the project's digital job site tools.
The best PEs are fast learners with strong organizational instincts. The role is intentionally broad — designed to build the foundational knowledge needed to grow into an APM or PM role within 3–5 years. GCs that invest in PE development build the strongest long-term leadership pipelines.
